Indications:

Abametapir is a topical pediculicide used to treat head lice infestations by disrupting parasite development.

🌿 Treatment of Head Lice (Pediculosis Capitis)

📌 Indicated for the topical treatment of head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) infestations in patients 6 months of age and older.
• Eliminates active lice by inhibiting metalloproteinases vital for lice and egg survival.
• Used as part of a comprehensive lice management plan, including cleaning personal items and the environment (e.g., bedding, clothing, combs).

    • Shake the bottle well before use.
    • Ensure hair is dry before application.
  2. Application:
    • Apply an amount sufficient to thoroughly coat the hair and scalp (up to the full content of one bottle).
    • Massage into the scalp and throughout the hair.
    • Avoid contact with eyes.
  3. Duration:
    • Leave the lotion on the hair and scalp for 10 minutes.

    • Rinse off with warm water.
    • Hair may be shampooed any time after treatment.
  5. Post-Application:
    • Wash hands thoroughly after application.
    • Discard any unused product; do not flush contents down sink or toilet.

⚠️ Important Considerations

  • Single Application: Treatment involves a single application; do not re-treat unless directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Environmental Measures: As part of an overall lice management program, wash or dry-clean all recently worn clothing, hats, bedding, and towels. Wash personal care items (e.g., combs, brushes, hair clips) in hot water.
  • Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness have not been established in patients younger than 6 months; use is not recommended for this age group.
Drug Interactions:
  • CYP450 Enzyme Inhibition: Abametapir may inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes (especially CYP3A4, CYP2B6, and CYP1A2), potentially increasing plasma concentrations of drugs metabolized by these enzymes.
  • Caution with Narrow Therapeutic Index Drugs: Use caution when co-administering with medications that have a narrow therapeutic index and are CYP3A4 substrates (e.g., some benzodiazepines, certain calcium channel blockers).
  • Topical Use Limiting Systemic Effects: Minimal systemic absorption reduces the likelihood of significant interactions; however, monitoring may be warranted in sensitive patients.
pregnancy & lactation:

Abametapir (Xeglyze) has no FDA pregnancy category. Animal studies show toxicity at high doses, but low absorption with topical use. No data on breastfeeding; caution is advised. Not recommended for infants under 6 months. Use during pregnancy or lactation should be considered if benefits outweigh risks, with healthcare provider consultation.

Side Effects:

The common side effects of Abametapir (Xeglyze) include:

  • Local skin reactions: Itching, redness, and irritation at the application site.
  • Burning sensation: Mild burning or stinging feeling on the skin.
  • Dryness: Dryness or peeling at the treated area.
  • Allergic reactions: Rash or swelling (rare).
Precautions & Warnings:
  1. Topical Use Only: Abametapir is for external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes. Rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
  2. Allergic Reactions: Use with caution in patients with a history of allergic reactions to any components of the product. Discontinue use if signs of severe irritation or an allergic reaction (such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing) occur.
  3. Infants: Not recommended for infants under 6 months due to potential risks.
  4. Pregnancy and Lactation: Safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risks.
  5. Avoid Open Wounds: Do not apply to open wounds or damaged skin.
  6. Irritation: If significant skin irritation occurs, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
  7. Concurrent Medications: There is limited data on interactions with other medications, so it's important to discuss any concurrent treatments with a healthcare provider.
