Indications:

Acyclovir (Ophthalmic) is a topical antiviral ophthalmic preparation indicated for the treatment of ocular herpesvirus infections, particularly Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) keratitis. It acts by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis, thereby controlling the spread and progression of the viral infection within the eye.

✅ Approved & Common Indications

🌿 Herpes Simplex Keratitis (Dendritic and Geographic Ulcers)

  • Indicated for the topical treatment of ocular HSV infections involving the cornea, such as:
    • Dendritic epithelial keratitis
    • Geographic corneal ulcers

Acyclovir ophthalmic ointment is used to prevent viral replication, limit corneal damage, and promote healing in infected patients.

🌿 Herpes Simplex Blepharitis and Conjunctivitis (Off-label/Adjunctive Use)

  • Occasionally used as an adjunct in the management of HSV infections affecting the eyelid margins (blepharitis) and conjunctiva (conjunctivitis), although systemic antiviral therapy is typically preferred for extensive involvement.
