Aminocaproic Acid is a synthetic antifibrinolytic agent that works by inhibiting plasminogen activation, thereby preventing the breakdown of fibrin clots. It is used primarily to control bleeding in conditions where fibrinolysis contributes significantly to blood loss.
✅ Approved & Common Indications
🌿 Acute Bleeding Due to Increased Fibrinolysis
- Indicated in conditions where there is excessive fibrinolysis leading to bleeding, such as: 📌 Postoperative bleeding following cardiac, hepatic, or urologic surgery
📌 Intracranial hemorrhage in certain coagulopathic states
📌 Bleeding after dental procedures in hemophiliacs (adjunctive therapy)
🌿 Hereditary Bleeding Disorders
- Used as adjunctive therapy in: 📌 Hemophilia to reduce bleeding after tooth extractions, surgery, or trauma
📌 Von Willebrand disease (off-label) in selected cases
🌿 Gynecologic Indications
- Occasionally used (off-label) for: 📌 Menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding)
📌 Postpartum hemorrhage when fibrinolysis is suspected
🌿 Urologic Bleeding
- Useful in treating: 📌 Hematuria, especially post-prostatectomy or in bladder cancer-related bleeding
📌 Bladder hemorrhage due to radiation or chemical cystitis
🌿 Cardiac Surgery & Liver Transplantation
- Helps reduce bleeding in: 📌 Cardiopulmonary bypass surgery
📌 Liver transplantation involving hyperfibrinolysis
